Earlier this year, Ft. Worth, Texas singer-songwriter Dan Johnson released a new album of songs, paired with a collection of fictional stories co-written with novelist Travis Erwin. The songs and stories include an imaginative cast of characters, from a grievously wounded veteran seeking salvation in drugs and alcohol, to an aging gun smuggler taking one last shot at love. The album and companion book are a project of a non-profit founded by Johnson called Operation Hemingway — named after the famed author who experienced the carnage of the Spanish Civil War and who, at the age of 61, killed himself. The project is a homage not only to Johnson’s own father but also to families like his who have endured the pain and grief of veteran suicide. The concept came to Johnson during a tour of Hemingway’s home in Key West. “I was there in his study. And when the rest of the tour group moved on I hung back.” Johnson says he began imagining what it was like for the author near the end. “He couldn’t go have any more adventures, he had become trapped in this old man’s body. And I wondered what that must be like to get to the point where you don’t feel like you have anything else you can give the world,” he says.In the title track on the album, “Hemingway,” an American soldier fighting in Afghanistan is nicknamed for the author because he regales his platoon with stories. So Hemingway tell us a tale. Of some great adventure of champions or fishermen or girls who put wind in men’s sails. Take us away, Hemingway. In the song, Hemingway is grievously wounded by an improvised explosive device and loses both legs and one of his eyes. Shipped home, he finds relief in Percocet and bourbon and eventually takes his life the same way.Dan Johnson knows something of the subject. The songwriter’s relationship with suicide began when he was 10 years old. That year, 1987, Johnson’s father — Terry Wayne Johnson, a Vietnam veteran, took his own life.”My dad and I were best friends, we went everywhere together. Right up until the day that he died,” says Johnson. In families, suicide can beget suicide. Fast forward 25 years,”there was a particular moment in life,” remembers Johnson, “when I had broken up the marriage of a dear friend of mine. And he didn’t deserve that and she didn’t deserve that and their son didn’t deserve that.”So in 2012, on a highway outside of Amarillo, Dan Johnson decided to follow in his father’s footsteps: “And I had the feeling — I don’t want to take up space anymore. This world would be a much better place if I weren’t in it.”Johnson hit the gas. His plan was to smash into the first bridge he came to so his children would get his life insurance. But for mile after mile there was only empty Panhandle.”And there was nothing to run into. So I had some time to think. I began thinking about my dad and thinking about — I bet he thought he was doing me a favor. And I’m about to do the exact same thing to my own kids.” Johnson pulled off to the side of the road shaking. After an hour he gathered himself and sitting in the middle of vacant West Texas, wrote a song of regret about a cowboy who’d hurt everyone he’d known. And he’d only learned one way to live in this world. Find what others had and take it away. It’s Johnson’s frank assessment of veteran suicide in the title track Hemingway that’s drawn the interest of veteran’s organizations. It got the attention of Jacob Schick, CEO of 22 Kill, a non-profit whose name is derived from the number of American veterans who kill themselves every day.”I learned through tragedy that the only way to honor those that came before us and those are going to come after us is to not only live but live well,” Schick said. “Look, we’re after acceptance, acceptance that it’s okay to not be okay. Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of your fear. You just have to weather the storm.”Like the soldier in Dan Johnson’s narrative, Schick was badly wounded. He lost his right leg, broke all his ribs and suffered a traumatic brain injury during combat operations in Iraq in 2004. It was Schick who helped Johnson sharpen his focus to the issue of veteran suicide.Dan Johnson is taking his project on the road, playing the material to audiences who reflect it back afterward. He’s learned to hang around once the show ends because veterans or their loved ones often want to talk to him, to thank him and then share their tales too. An emotional release comes with the storytelling. If you or someone you know may be considering suicide, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 (En Español: 1-888-628-9454; Deaf and Hard of Hearing: 1-800-799-4889) or the Crisis Text Line by texting 741741. “Hemingway on Fishing”Last updated on July 3rd, 2019 at 07:11 pmKeup“Hemingway on Fishing”By Ernest HemingwayArt Keup was recently named chief financial officer at Luther Manor, an independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing facility in Wauwatosa. For Christmas, his wife gave him a new book he’s enjoyed reading and would recommend to other executives.“The book on my nightstand right now is Hemingway on Fishing, a collection of short stories and magazine articles that he wrote about fishing in various countries,” Keup said. The book delves into the esteemed author’s love of fishing and his writings on everything from trout fishing in Michigan to marlin fishing in the Gulf Stream. It even includes passages on fishing from his popular books “The Sun Also Rises” and “Old Man and the Sea.”“The short stories and excerpts in ‘Hemingway on Fishing’ cover his trips in northern Michigan as well as the Florida keys, Cuba and Europe, from about 1919 through the 1940s. I’ve learned a bit about how people traveled and fished in pre-WWII Europe,” Keup said. The complete rededication Mass and blessing of the new altar at Saint Leonard Church in Boston’s North End was captured on the video shown above, created by videographer Norman Lang. The video is also been shown on Catholic TV this week.Cardinal Seán O’Malley said the following on his blog:“I was so happy to preside at the rededication of St. Leonard’s and the blessing of the altar. The Franciscan provincial, Father Robert Campagna, was there, as well as a number of friars who had served at St. Leonard’s in the past. It was a beautiful celebration, and I was particularly moved by the remarks delivered by the head of the St. Joseph Society, Mark Ravensi, at the end of Mass before presenting their check for $1 million towards the cost of the renovations.*Advertisement* “He spoke about the Franciscan Friars who ministered to the Italian immigrants over 100 years ago who were coming mainly from southern Italy and Sicily, at a time when there was so much poverty in that part of the world. As people fled their homeland, the Franciscan friars at St. Leonard’s helped to make a spiritual home for them and built the parish school and high school to educate their children. Then, after the terrible influenza outbreak of 1917, which caused so many deaths, the friars were instrumental in setting up the Italian Home for Children to care for the orphans. They expressed their great love and gratitude to the Italian Franciscan Friars who had served the people in the North End in so many ways for over hundred years. They said that was the reason that they wanted to make this extraordinary donation to help in the renovations of St. Leonard’s. It was a very moving presentation.”“Everyone, of course, is so grateful to Father Antonio who gives such outstanding leadership in the community and is beloved by all of his parishioners.”Donations are still being accepted for the continuing restoration effort at RestoreStLeonards.com.See more photos of St. Leonard Church and the reopening/alter consecration Mass.

Out. Their names may not resonate with a more green mixed martial arts (MMA) fan, but for the long-time viewers of the sport; the names Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic and Gabriel Gonzaga are synonymous with one of the biggest and most odd upsets in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) history.Fight fans prepare for a night of nostalgia when Filipovic and Gonzaga partake in another Octagon romp at UFC Fight Night 64 in Krakow, Poland today (Apr. 11, 2015). The pair previously fought at UFC 70 in April 2007, with the Brazilian getting the better of the Croatian fighter via head-kick.Rounding out the main card, which will be broadcasted live on UFC Fight Pass, are bouts containing the power-punching Brit Jimi Manuwa and top ranked women’s strawweight Joanne Calderwood.A majority of the fighters on this rare afternoon UFC spectacle are still in their prime and have years of Octagon time ahead of them, but not 40-year-old Filipovic. His return after a three-year hiatus seems more like one last hoorah, if anything. The fighter who was once known for his deadly left head-kick has managed to scrape together a 3-1 record in his last four fights (all of which were in Japan). But prior to those wins, Filipovic found himself on the wrong end of some vicious beatdowns, which ultimately led to his retirement from MMA.He may not be fighting for a title at this point in time, but his legacy in the sport has already been written. In his heyday, his head-kicks were revered and menacing; Cro Cop could snap one off on a whim. The Croatian’s highlight-filled career began 14 years ago in the storied PRIDE promotion. Filipovic took no prisoners and compiled a laundry list of notable names for victims. He had difficulty making his presence felt early in Japan, fighting to two draws against Nobuhiko Takada and Wanderlei Silva. His fight with “The Axe Murderer” set the tone for what was to come as it showcased his resilience to withstand a potent offensive attack.Future Japanese legend Kazushi Sakuraba was next on Filipovic’s docket. The two engaged in a mildly-entertaining tilt, with no fighter dishing out any significant amount of damage, but the fight was called after two rounds because of an eye injury to Sakuraba.Filipovic was gradually getting a taste of the various styles in MMA; just as fighters were getting acquainted with his devastating knockout power. Sakuraba was able to ground the Croatian and he even dropped him with a straight left-hand.After (3-0-2) start to his career, Filipovic would soon find his groove. He enjoyed a dominant stretch in 2003, notching victories over Heath Herring, Igor Vovchanchyn and Dos Caras Jr. Two of those wins came via his illustrious head-kick.It was right leg, hospital; left leg, cemetery. Fighters didn’t know which way, at what speed or ferocity that his missiles of legs were coming from. The K-1 kickboxing extraordinaire then met Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in what was one of the best fights of 2003. With a title on the line, Nogueira and Filipovic went to war for a little over five minutes, before the striker succumbed to the grappling prowess of his opponent. It was Filipovic’s first legitimate loss and a critical point in his upstart fight career. Would he flame out, or continue on to stumble to a simply mediocre tenure in Pride? The latter would not be the case. From that point onward, Filipovic established his name and cemented his place in the record books. For 15 years, he picked apart the world’s best in one of the greatest promotions ever assembled. And he did it without much talking, music or pyrotechnics. Cro Cop was just Cro Cop.Much like his terrifying head-kicks, the beauty wasn’t in his power, but instead his grace. His fight trunks became a staple of his character and country, while his staredowns signaled the beginning of the end for most men.Alexander Emelianenko, Josh Barnett (three times), Kevin Randleman, Mark Coleman and Silva all fell to Filipovic over the next two years. Among those bouts were some of his most historic knockouts to date, including this doozy against the Brazilian Silva. But it was his part in a pivotal loss that was perhaps his most memorable contribution to the fight game. In August 2005, Filipovic battled pound-for-pound great Fedor Emelianenko. The 2000’s Fight of the Decade was contested on the feet and the mat. Filipovic flustered the Russian brute on multiple occasions but was stymied in the end by the latters’ impressive background in Sambo.Though he fell to 0-2 in title fights with the loss to “The Last Emperor”, Filipovic rode an uncontrollable hype-train into the UFC in 2006. Eddie Sanchez was toast in his debut, but then came the unexpected.Gonzaga, a fighter known for his jiu-jitsu skills, took out the elite striker with a startling right head-kick — the one that Filipovic so famously employed while in Pride. It was like the world was flipped upside down, could it be?Things would go from bad to worse for him. After a lopsided decision-loss to French striker Cheick Kongo, Filipovic was released from the UFC.Two quick wins over lackluster competition in Japan would be all the UFC needed to bring him back stateside. His last stint in the promotion lasted from 2009-2011 and brought forth mixed results.Wins over Mostapha Al Turk, Anthony Perosh and Pat Barry were compounded by underwhelming efforts against foes like Roy Nelson and Frank Mir. What stands out from that list of names is a clear discrepancy in talent level.Filipovic succeeded against those he was expected to beat, but when he took a step up in competition, he faltered. It is then obligatory to ask: how was he able to thrive against elite fighters in Japan but not in the UFC?Two answers come to mind: damage taken and age. Filipovic was in his mid-30s during his most recent stint. The majority of his notable Pride wins came before he hit the age of 30.Damage wise, Filipovic ate some blows but spent far less time in the squared circle than most. In 18 PRIDE victories, he accrued close to 109 minutes of ring time.At 40, Cro Cop doesn’t have much left to give to MMA (sorry to be frank), nor does he have much to prove. The man still has a big following and will be fighting for the 45th time.So even though his rematch with Gonzaga may only excite seasoned fans of the sport, it’s still worth your eyes and ears. Fight on, Cro Cop!Remember, too, that MMAmania.com will provide LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the entire UFC Fight Night 64 fight card, starting with the Fight Pass “Prelims” matches online, which are scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m. ET, right on through the Fight Pass-only main card, which is slated to begin at 3 p.m. ET. I was upset with all that because I’m an idol, I’m recognized all over the world, and I want to be treated as such, not as an outlaw. The commission creates problems so they can come up with a solution. In my opinion, that’s completely wrong. They should review they whole statute and legislation, because that’s wrong.”Silva, whose defense is based on the fact that he wasn’t licensed by the commission when a sample collector showed up at his gym in Las Vegas to collect a urine sample, is currently in talks with three MMA promotions. A Chechnya-based promotion is interested in having the Brazilian on his roster, he says, but Bellator MMA and Rizin Fighting Federation appear to have an advantage.”I had a meeting with Nobuyuki Sakakibara, and he’s super interested in bringing me back to Japan, he said the Japanese are anxious to see me compete again. We’re also flirting with Bellator,” he said with a laugh. “They want to make a deal together so I can fight in Japan and here in the United States, and I would fight for both promotions. I’m negotiating an exhibition fight in Rizin on April 17. They offered me a jiu-jitsu match, two versus two. It would be Team Wanderlei, Andre Dida and I, against a team from Japan. I’m also negotiating a tournament in Japan, in which I would fight in September and come back in December for two fights in one night. That’s the plan for 2016.””I really want to fight again in Japan,” he added. “The Japanese promotion created Wanderlei Silva… I ended my career a while ago for disgust, not because I couldn’t do it physically or mentally, but for disgust. But I think this time off made me really like it again, and I’m really happy that I’m feeling this desire to fight again. Like I said, I’m in negotiation to come back to fighting in Japan and I really want big challenges.”Silva, who once replaced Fedor Emelianenko in the PRIDE Open Weight Grand Prix, doesn’t rule out a potential clash with “The Last Emperor” in the future.”There’s a possibility of fighting Fedor, who is an opponent I would really like to fight. I’m not just talking, but can’t be the first one, right?” said “The Axe Murderer”. “Now that I haven’t fought in two years, I can’t get him right away. I need to do some fights first, get my rhythm back, and when the promotion thinks it’s time and I feel I’m in a good rhythm, I would really want to test myself against him, for sure. I’ve fought the best in the world but him. I would really like to test myself against him. I don’t have anything against Fedor, but I would like to test myself and see how it goes.” Should Frankie Edgar finally fight at bantamweight? Print Photo by timechaser on Flickr/Creative CommonsOn this day in 1850, The Scarlet Letter was first published by a relatively unknown author. Although his name is synonymous with literary greatness today, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s writing career got off to a rocky start. The Salem native wrote a few stories in the years after graduating from Bowdoin College, but they didn’t produce a living wage. As his young family began to grow in the 1840s, he took a job at the Salem Customs House to support them. For three years, things went well, until he was ousted because of political disagreements. A few weeks later, his mother died.“I detest this town so much that I hate to go out into the streets, or to have people see me,” he said at the time. So, an embittered and grieving Hawthorne channeled his anger into his first great work: The Scarlet Letter. He furiously wrote the pages of the novel, completing it in less than a year. Today, the story is the reigning example of required reading in high school, but at the time of its publishing, it was a gripping tale of scandal in a Puritan town. The book examines the life of Hester Prynne, a married woman who has an affair and gives birth to a daughter. She refuses to identify her lover, and bears a scarlet “A” on her clothes to shame her for committing adultery. When it was published 167 years ago, The Scarlet Letter was an immediate hit. The first edition sold out in two weeks and propelled him to fame. The newfound success fueled him to write another book—The House of Seven Gables—but didn’t sustain Hawthorne or his family financially. It turns out, the royalties on the book were poor, and overseas editions paid less than a penny per copy, according to Mental Floss. He continued to be sidetracked by money troubles, and later was appointed the American consul to England by his college pal, President Franklin Pierce. Buddy, not a chance. There was already some cosmic energy working in Boston’s favor heading into the week: The Boston hotel workers’ union, incensed by the Dodgers’ decision to cross their picket line this week, said they hoped was an “omen” for LA, like it was for the Yankees. That may be the case. But a double goddamned rainbow? That’s magic. And it’s powerful stuff.Remember, this is somehow the second double rainbow to grace Fenway before the World Series, after one of them appeared around the stadium a day ahead of Game 1 in 2013—a World Series, you’ll recall, that the Red Sox won.And now, the enchanted double rainbow has returned.A double double rainbow. It’s all over folks.@ericfisher @RedSox Good omen? Double rainbow seen from Cambridge. Maybe the pot of gold is in Fenway Park. Lawmaker Accused of Groping a Female Colleague State Rep. Paul McMurtry allegedly grabbed a woman’s behind at an event. Paul McMurtry, right, is accused of grabbing a woman’s behind at a State House event. | Photo via State House News ServiceAs Beacon Hill continues to grapple with what women have described as a culture that looked the other way in the face of harassment and inappropriate behavior, a high-ranking state rep is now accused of groping a female colleague.According to a bombshell report in the Boston Globe, a woman in state government alleges that Rep. Paul McMurtry of Dedham grabbed her behind at an orientation event. An ad hoc committee is investigating whether to pursue the allegations further, McMurtry, who served at the time of the alleged incident as head of the House Committee on Personnel and Administration and is considered part of House Speaker Robert DeLeo’s inner circle, denies the allegations, calling them “absolutely, positively, unequivocally not true” and said he would “participate in any review” of the incident. Two lawmakers tell the Globe that the woman, who has not been identified publicly, told them McMurtry grabbed her during a cocktail reception at UMass Amherst. A third lawmaker claims she witnessed the alleged groping.DeLeo reportedly heard rumors of the alleged misconduct and referred the matter to House counsel and it has since been referred it to an outside consultant. The House adopted new policies regarding sexual assault and harassment on Beacon Hill last year after reports of harassment and inappropriate behavior roiled the State House. It also came amid fallout from sexual misconduct allegations leveled against Bryon Hefner, husband of ex-Senate President Stan Rosenberg. Rosenberg resigned last year. Print
