By: Indrawattie NatramDevotees of Golden Fleece Mandir observing Krishna JayantiHundreds of Hindus in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) on Thursday observed the auspicious festival of Shri Krishna Jayanti (birthday of Lord Krishna) with congregational worship. The observances were held in accordance with the August 25 date outlined by the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha calendar.Hindus throughout the Essequibo Coast visited their temples, offered flowers and prayers, singing religious songs, giving reverence to Lord Krishna, who is a significant God in Hinduism.Lord Krishna is worshipped as the eighth incarnation or avatar of Lord Vishnu. Krishna is also worshipped as a supreme god in his own right by numerous sects around the world.Special pujas were held in temples. Morning services were conducted at Golden Fleece Mandir, Zorg, Johanna Ceclia, Cotton Field, and Anna Regina. Poojas and rituals were held at midnight at some temples to coincide with the time of Krishna’s birth.Persons also fasted for 24-hours in recognition of the auspicious day. Many recited the mantra ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya,’ while at various temples, stories of Lord Krishna were shared.Krishna the Hindu God, used his incarnation to explain to his followers the great teachings of the Upanishads. He was a flute player and a lover of music.The festival is observed on the eighth day after the full moon in the month of Shravan (August /September). Although the festival is celebrated worldwide, Shri Krishna Jayanti is not celebrated on the same day in all parts of World and this is due to the various regional calendars and the varying calculations in the time of the birth of Krishna.
